Record Store Day 2013 - Release Your Inner Music Geek

Are you going to Record Store Day?

This is a great opportunity to let your baseball card collecting take a back seat to your music appreciation for one day and go spend some money at a local business.  It's gotten pretty huge, so I hope you are near a participating independently-owned record store.  Click here to check for stores near you.

I am not affiliated with RSD, it's just something I love and get behind.  This is a wonderful nationwide event, and I'm proud to say I've attended every RSD there's been.

It's a tradition for all the music geeks in town to gather in droves at 8am in front of whatever record shop we frequent and talk about music while we wait to spend a bunch of cash on limited edition vinyl and CDs.  It can be a bit bankrupting, but it only comes once a year.

Here is a list of all the great limited edition stuff that's available only at your local record shop starting Saturday morning (or Friday at midnight).  If you're planning on picking anything up, leave it in the comments below.  Here is my personal shopping list:

Bob Dylan Wigmam 7"
Elliott Smith Alternate Versions from Either/Or 7"
Dave Brubeck Trio Distinctive Rhythym Instrumentals 10"
Fela Kuti and the Africa 70 Sorrow, Tears & Blood 12" (this is the first thing I plan on grabbing!)
The Cure Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me reissue
Deftones Live Volume 1 - Selections from Adrenaline
John Coltrane Newport 61
Lamb of God New American Gospel (only 500 pressed - will be tough)
Miles Davis Milestones
Miles Davis 'Round About Midnight
Miles Davis Someday My Prince Will Come
Miles Davis The Kind of Blue Sessions '59
Nick Drake Nick Drake
Sigur Ros Agaetis Byrjun (I own the original, but this one may sound better - limited to 1000 - ouch)
Astralwerks 20/20 box set
Blues at Newport

There's no way I'll be able to afford all that.  I only plan on actually landing a few of those items, but the items in bold are my top priority.  (By the way, if you see a Sigur Ros or a Lamb of God at your shop, please buy one for me and I'll pay you back - I already know those are going to be tough grabs.)

I have a mild interest in the Beta Band and Grizzly Bear LP's as well as the Placebo EP, the Cake single, and the Bonobo box set.  I will also be taking advantage of my shop's RSD discounts and try to pick up vinyl copies of Beach House Bloom, Queen News of the World, The Who A Quick One, and whatever else I see that tickles my fancy (and my credit card).

So, what are you going for?

And of course, here a Griffey for all you vinyl collectors to look at while you wait in line to buy said items....

Happy vinyl hunting!

  1. In honor of record store day, I will only be playing vinyl this evening.
Yes, I have a working record player.

  2. Right on, Junior Junkie! Great piece of vinyl-tastic reporting here and, despite never having participated, there are a few draws from your list, namely:

Bob Dylan Wigmam 7" (I like Dylan, but the collection is fine as is)
Elliott Smith Alternate Versions from Either/Or 7" (I've always wanted to like this guy, but just haven't been able to get into his sound. Weird.)
Dave Brubeck Trio Distinctive Rhythym Instrumentals 10" (this 10" could be a gem)
Fela Kuti and the Africa 70 Sorrow, Tears & Blood 12" (sweeeeet! Fela!)
The Cure Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me reissue (nothing like 'em on a rainy day)
Miles Davis The Kind of Blue Sessions '59
    Nick Drake Nick Drake
Sigur Ros Agaetis Byrjun (if it's 180g, do it!)

    1. Wigwam is sucha great song, though! It's on the Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack and I love it. And yes, Fela is super fun, despite the title....

The most accessible Elliott Smith album to me is Figure 8. It's got some gems on it. Give it another listen!

  3. I've only lived within driving distance of an RSD affiliated store two of the years that its gone on. Was able to add to my small 7" collection each time: Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Elvis Costello, Wilco, Soundgarden, and an EP from Cold War Kids. Won't be making it this year, though. Too far away, plus no funds and no releases that really grab me. Love the atmosphere of RSD, however. Have a ton of fun!

  4. I'm going after the releases by Old 97's, Elliott Smith, The Thermals, R.E.M. and probably Built To Spill. I'm sure there's a few other things I'm forgetting to mention as well. As is often the case, I'm sure I won't be able to find everything I'm looking for, especially because I'm not exactly an early riser. It's a nice excuse to go record shopping (not that I need one) and I'm sure I'll pick up a few non-RSD exclusive items tomorrow as well.

  5. I can't deal with the eBay flippers on RSD, so I avoid it and just grab what I want at some later point. The only things that interested me this go around was the Daniel Johnston "Fun" lp and the Brian Jonestown Massacre 12". I saw the BJM yesterday at a shop for $20 which seems ridiculous since it only has three songs. I'll probably pass altogether. The Fun lp, though, that is on my radar.

Oh, and the Flaming Lips 4lp release intrigued me because I remember when it originally came out on CD years ago and was always curious why it was never released on vinyl.

    1. I saw both of those two items for sale on RSD - I bet there are a few copies still available here if you get desperate.

Don't waste your money on Zaireeka just yet. I have the cd version from way back and we actually did set it up with the 4 seperate players perfectly synced. While it was pretty cool, It's not worth spending what the flippers are listing them for.

Plus, who has 4 turntables, 4 pre-amps, and 4 sets of speakers? Not to mention that it would be nearly impossible to sync. I'm thinking it's strictly a shelf piece.

  6. I am more intrigued by the concept of Zaireeka than the actual end product. I've thought about a movie idea that follows the same sort of gimmick; four separate movies that stand alone but if you want the complete story, you'd have to watch all four on one screen, in four boxes. Ugh, that sounds lame when I type it out but in my head, it makes sense.

    1. They have that! I think it was called Timestamp or something like that. It was on HBO a few years back....
