Attack of the Giant Griffeys Part 1: Cardpocalypse

Here at the Junior Junkie we collect and catalog Griffeys in all shapes and sizes.  From the tiniest Topps Micro to a 25" x 39" uncut sheet of Mother's Cookies cards and everything in between, I make it my personal mission to make sure every item is properly stored.

Today we dip into the vault of oversized cardboard (an empty hobby box of 2005 Collector's Choice) for the first in a series of posts featuring only those Griffeys of sufficient hugeness as to necessitate unorthodox storage methods. 

Let's have some fun:

This big, purple postcard celebrates its 20th birthday this year, making it one of the oldest but also one of the coolest oversized pieces I have.  We've got one of those great Dick Perez paintings of the Kid and his mighty Griffstache, that great 50's font along the top, and take a look at the back - yep, it's a postcard, people.  You can tell by the way it tells you where to put the stamp.  Really anything can be a postcard so long as it tells you where to put the stamp.  The purple and gold LSU colors are a nice touch, too.  South Louisiana is one of the only places in America where purple and gold look right together.  The size is a mighty 3.5" x 5". 

Materialistic is a box topper insert from Fleer I got in an eBay lot.  Some iterations of the insert appeared in multiple different sets within the Fleer line for 2001, but this particular one came from their 2002 Focus Jersey Edition set.  It's super big at 3.75" x 5.25" and features printing on a massive material swatch.  A relic swatch of this size would be nice considering the set is called "Jersey Edition," but who am I to complain?  A blogger, that's who.  It's what we do.

This is a postcard advertising a lithograph of a painting by James Fiorentino.  It's a great representation of the Kid and of '53 Topps.  Looks like it's still available here.  The print will run you about $100, but I was able to pick up this postcard for a dollar at a local card show (I would have paid three).  The way I see it I made 99 bucks on this deal.  The card is 3.75" x 5.125"

If you ever went poster shopping at Wal-Mart in the mid-90's you probably saw one of these in the plastic hangers.  It kills me to see what's in there today (Bieber, unicorns, Selena Gomez).  Despite having blank backs, either of these would make a great-looking card.  I especially like the fact that all the legalese that appears on the full-size 24 x 36 versions also appears on these.....in the same size ratio.  The letters are basically tiny lines of dots, unreadable by humans at any level of visual accuity. 

There are plenty more gigantic Griffeys in the vault that I look forward to showing off and making snarky comments about.  See you then!
